What does a normal shift look like for you?
Why ask it
Forecasting work is shift work built around data release times and briefing deadlines, and the day looks nothing like the two minutes seen on air. The answer sets up almost every other question you might ask.
When the forecast says a seventy percent chance of rain, seventy percent of what?
Why ask it
Probability of precipitation is the most widely misread number in the field, and a good forecaster will explain what it refers to at a given point and time rather than to how much of the map or the day gets wet. If they cannot explain it plainly, that is worth noticing too.
What is the practical difference between a watch, a warning, and an advisory?

These terms carry specific operational meanings about certainty and timing, and mixing them up is what leads people to take shelter too late. Ask what each one means for what a household should physically do.
How far ahead is a forecast genuinely useful?
Why ask it
You are asking where skill drops off and where a forecast becomes little better than the long-term average for that date. Honest answers vary by what is being forecast, with temperature holding up much longer than the timing of a single thunderstorm.
Where does the data come from before it reaches you?
Why ask it
Surface stations, radiosondes, radar, satellites, aircraft, and buoys all feed the picture, and the gaps in that network explain many forecast failures. A forecaster who can describe the observation network will also be able to tell you where it is thin near you.
Which models do you look at, and do you ever disagree with them?

The interesting part is the human judgement layered on top: local terrain, a known model bias, a boundary the model handles badly. Someone who never overrules the output is describing a different job than someone who does.
What is hardest to forecast in this particular area?

Almost every region has one stubborn problem: lake effect snow bands, sea breeze convection, mountain valley fog, rain or snow transitions near freezing. This answer is the most locally useful thing in any conversation with a forecaster.
Which forecast do you remember getting badly wrong?

Forecasters usually remember the miss in detail, including what the data looked like at the time. The answer shows how the field treats error, which is closer to routine review than to blame.
Who actually decides when a warning goes out, and what happens in the minutes beforehand?

Warning issuance follows defined criteria and often sits with a specific office rather than with a broadcaster. Understanding that division explains why a television meteorologist may be describing a threat before an official warning exists.
How do you word a warning for something that might not happen?

This is the central communication problem of the job: convey enough urgency to prompt action without overstating certainty. Listen for concrete practice, such as leading with the action to take rather than the probability.
What do people most often do wrong when a warning is issued?

How much of your job is forecasting, and how much is explaining it to people?

What has changed most in the work since you started?

Answers usually involve model resolution, radar upgrades, or the shift to social media as the primary warning channel. It also surfaces what has not changed, which is often the physics and the fundamental limits on predictability.
What do the long-term records for this area actually show?

Keeps the discussion on observed local data: first and last freeze dates, heavy rainfall frequency, nights above a given temperature. It is a more answerable question than a general one about climate, and it stays in their area of expertise.
Is there weather you personally find unsettling?

People who study storms professionally usually still have one thing that bothers them, and it is rarely the most dramatic phenomenon. The reason they give is often about warning lead time rather than intensity.
What do pilots, farmers, or mariners ask you that the general public never does?

Specialist users ask about ceilings, soil temperature, wind shear, dew point, and sea state, which are the variables that actually drive decisions. It shows how much detail sits behind a public forecast.
If someone wants to do this work, what should they study and where are the jobs?

Expect physics and mathematics to feature more heavily than people assume, along with programming. Ask where employment actually sits, since the government, private, aviation, energy, and broadcast paths differ substantially in numbers and hours.

Different settings, different questions
A school or community visit
Lead with the questions that produce a demonstration: what the radar is showing right now, how a balloon sounding works, why the local terrain changes the forecast. Anything that can be shown holds a room better than anything explained.
A newsroom or forecast office tour
Ask about the timeline of a shift and the moment a warning is issued. Staff are usually happy to walk through a recent event, and a real case teaches more than a general explanation.
A career conversation
Ask about the maths and programming load, shift patterns, pay bands, and how they moved between roles. Broadcast, government service, and private forecasting are close to separate careers.
Useful things to know going in
- Weather and climate are different timescales, and many forecasters work on one and not the other. Asking a broadcast meteorologist about long-term projections may be outside their day-to-day work.
- Official warnings and on-air commentary come from different places. Knowing which is which explains a lot of apparent contradiction.
- Model output is a starting point, not a forecast. The forecaster's contribution is the adjustment for local effects and known biases.
- Forecast skill differs by variable. Temperature two days out and thunderstorm timing two hours out are not comparable problems.
- Most forecasters have a specialty, whether that is aviation, marine, hydrology, or severe convection, and their best answers will be inside it.
What not to ask
Asking for a forecast for a personal date months out
Nobody can forecast a specific day beyond about a week. What they can give you is the historical record for that date, which is the useful version of the question.
Treating an error as dishonesty
A missed forecast is normally a limit of predictability, not carelessness. Opening with a complaint about last weekend closes off the interesting parts of the conversation.
Using the conversation to argue
If you want to discuss climate, ask about local records and observed trends and let them stay in their expertise. A debate framing will end the exchange without either of you learning anything.
Skipping the safety questions
The most valuable answers in any conversation with a forecaster concern what to do when a warning is issued. Ask those even if the rest of the discussion is about science.
