Questions to Ask Researchers
Questions for students, writers, and curious visitors talking with a working researcher, covering the project itself, how strong the evidence is, what the methods cannot show, and what the job actually involves.

What are you working on right now, and how would you explain it to someone outside your field?
Why ask it
The plain-language version shows whether someone understands the work or only its vocabulary. Researchers early in a project tend to describe the method, while those further along describe the question.
What question got you started on this, and are you still asking the same one?
Why ask it
Projects drift, and the drift is usually the interesting part: an inquiry about one thing that turned into an inquiry about another. If the original and current question are identical after several years, ask what has been learned.
What does a normal week actually look like for you?
Why ask it
Most research time goes to grant writing, teaching, code, equipment, and administration rather than discovery. The proportion is the biggest surprise for students weighing the career.
How long has this project been running, and how far into it are you?
Why ask it
Timelines set the weight of everything else, since a preliminary result two months in is not a finding. It also explains why they may be reluctant to state a conclusion you would like stated plainly.
What part of the work is tedious in a way outsiders never picture?
Why ask it
Asking for the tedium invites honesty and produces the most memorable detail: the sample preparation, the cleaning of a dataset, the years of recruitment. It also shows where errors are most likely to enter.
What would you have to see to conclude you were wrong?
Why ask it
This is the fastest way to distinguish a scientist from an advocate. A specific falsifying result means the hypothesis is real; irritation at the question suggests the conclusion arrived before the data.
What has failed in this project, and what did you do next?
Why ask it
Failure is most of the record and almost none of the publications. Listen for whether the response was a changed method, a changed question, or quiet abandonment.
How confident are you in your most recent result, and what would raise that confidence?
Why ask it
Researchers distinguish between what they believe and what they can defend, and asking lets them separate the two. Naming what would help, such as replication or a larger sample, is more informative than the result itself.
What can your methods not tell you?
Why ask it
Every method has boundaries: correlation without causation, small samples, animal models that only partly resemble people, self-reported data. Someone who volunteers their own limits is someone whose claims you can weigh.
What does your field disagree about, and where do you sit?
Why ask it
Every field has live disputes that outsiders read as settled consensus. Hearing where they stand, and who they think is mistaken, is how you learn the shape of the field.
Which finding in your area do you expect will not hold up?
Why ask it
This asks for a prediction of failure, which takes judgment and some nerve. Answers often point at results that are widely cited but thinly supported, and the reasoning teaches you how to read a paper.
Who else has to be involved for this work to happen?
Why ask it
Research is far more collaborative than a first-author byline suggests, and the answer surfaces the technicians, statisticians, clinicians, and participants who make it possible. It also clarifies what the person in front of you actually does.
Who funds this, and does the funding shape what you can study?
Why ask it
Funding source determines topic, timeline, and occasionally what can be published, and most researchers discuss it openly. Grant cycles also explain why promising work sometimes stops abruptly.
How do you decide a paper is finished?
Why ask it
Publication is a judgment about when the story is sufficient, not a natural endpoint. The answer exposes the pressures they work under, from a student needing to graduate to a grant renewal date.
What happened to the last paper you submitted, and how long did review take?
Why ask it
Peer review runs for months and often reshapes a paper substantially, none of which is visible in the published version. Rejections and requested extra experiments are the part of the process outsiders never see.
If your results hold, what changes, and how long would that take?
Why ask it
Separating a finding from its application prevents the leap from cell culture to cure that press coverage tends to make. Most researchers answer in years and then hedge, which is the honest response.
What gets overstated about your field in the press?
Why ask it
Researchers watch their work get exaggerated and can name the specific distortion, whether a headline about a breakthrough or a percentage quoted without its baseline. This is the most useful thing they can hand a nonspecialist.
What would you work on if funding were not a constraint?
Why ask it
The answer shows what the funding system does not support, which is often replication, long-term studies, and unfashionable questions. It also tends to be the subject they speak about with the most energy.
What do you wish you had known before starting a research career?
Why ask it
You get the honest version: pay, geographic mobility, the postdoc years, and the odds of a permanent position. Prospective students hear the recruiting version far more often than this one.
What should I read to understand this properly, and what should I skip?
Why ask it
A review article or a textbook chapter is usually a better entry point than the primary literature, and researchers know which ones are readable. Asking what to skip also guards against being pointed only at their own back catalog.

Best Practices
Read One Thing First, Including the Limitations
Read the abstract of a recent paper and the limitations paragraph near the end, which is where authors say plainly what their work does not show. Arriving with one specific question about that paragraph changes the conversation entirely.
Say What You Do and Do Not Understand
Researchers routinely misjudge how much background a listener has and either oversimplify or lose them. Telling them your level at the start, and interrupting when a term goes past you, produces better answers than nodding along.
Ask for the Number, Then Ask What It Means
A percentage without a baseline, a sample size, or a comparison group is close to meaningless. Follow every figure with out of how many, compared with what, and over what period.
Check Quotes Back If You Are Writing Anything
Send the sentences you plan to use and ask whether they are accurate. Most researchers will correct an overstatement rather than object to being quoted, and it costs one email.
Terms Worth Understanding Before You Ask
- Preprint: a paper posted publicly before peer review has taken place
- Peer review: assessment by other researchers in the field, usually anonymous, often taking months
- Replication: an independent attempt to get the same result, and the main test of whether a finding holds
- Effect size: how large a difference is, as distinct from whether a difference was detected at all
- Confidence interval: the range of values the data are consistent with, which matters more than a single estimate
- Observational versus experimental: whether the researcher intervened, which decides what can be said about cause
- In vitro, animal model, and human trial: three very different distances from a treatment that works in people
- Principal investigator, postdoc, and graduate student: who directs the work, who runs it, and who is training
Common Pitfalls
Pushing for a Yes or No on an Uncertain Question
Hedging is often accuracy rather than evasion. If you need something quotable, ask what they would say if forced to bet, and report the hedge along with the answer.
Confusing the Person With the Field
A specialist in one narrow area may know little about the neighboring one and will usually say so. Ask what falls inside their expertise before asking them to speak for a whole discipline.
Treating One Study as a Conclusion
Single studies are provisional by design, which is why replication exists. Ask where their result sits relative to the rest of the literature and who disagrees with it.
Skipping the Practicalities of the Career
Students asking only about discovery leave without knowing about funding cycles, mobility, pay, or the job market. Those are the facts that determine whether this life suits you.
