Funny Hypothetical Questions to Ask Your Boyfriend
Twenty hypotheticals to spring on your boyfriend on a long drive, over dinner, or in a dead stretch of a Sunday. Each one has a strange constraint attached, because the constraint is what stops him giving the answer he thinks he is supposed to give, and a note on where to push if he tries to escape with one word.
20 questions, each with the reason to ask it · includes a conversation guide

- 1
You get one superpower, but it only works when you are hungry. What do you pick?
The constraint is the whole question. Watch whether he optimizes around the rule or ignores it, which sorts him instantly into rules lawyer or vibes guy. Both are funny, differently.
- 2
We are stuck in a lift together for six hours. What are you doing at hour five?
Hour one answers are performative calm, so skip straight to hour five where the truth lives. Then ask what he thinks you are doing at hour five, which is the better half of the answer.
- 3
You have to fight one animal to save this relationship. Which one, and what is the plan?
Everybody picks an animal and almost nobody has a strategy, so the plan is where it gets good. If he picks something enormous, ask him to walk you through the first ten seconds.
- 4
You must replace your entire wardrobe with one outfit, worn forever. What is it?
You will learn what he thinks he looks best in, which is often not what he actually reaches for. If those two answers differ wildly, he already knows it and will admit it if you wait.
- 5
You get to be famous for something completely useless. What is it?
Useless fame gets a better answer than the standard version, because there is no way to be humble about it. Ask what the news headline says, and he will keep going for another minute.
- 6
A genie offers unlimited money, but you have to narrate your own life out loud forever. Deal?
The ones who say yes instantly should be made to demonstrate immediately, ideally while ordering coffee. The ones who hesitate are telling you exactly how much they hate being perceived.
- 7
If a song played every time you walked into a room, what is it?
The song matters less than the reason. Ask why that one and you get either a real memory or a confession that he picked it purely for the entrance, which is its own answer.
- 8
You can teleport anywhere instantly, but you always arrive soaking wet. Where do you still go?
The wet clause forces a genuine ranking. Anywhere he still picks is somewhere he actually wants to be, which is more honest than any normal travel question gets.
- 9
Zombie outbreak. You get three people from your phone contacts. Who?
Watch whether he picks people he likes or people who are useful, and whether you made the list on merit or diplomacy. The third pick is always the one he has to justify.
- 10
You swap lives with me for one day. What is the first thing you do?
A soft trap. Good answers show he has noticed something specific about how your day actually goes. Weak answers are entirely about your hair, and you are allowed to say so.
- 11
You are given a small dragon and must keep it secret. How long before you are caught?
Secret-keeping hypotheticals show how he thinks about risk. The best part is who he says catches him first, and it is very often his mother.
- 12
Everyone can hear your thoughts for one hour a week, and you choose the hour. Which?
The scheduling is the joke. Whether he picks an hour asleep, an hour at work, or an hour mid-argument tells you where he believes he is most exposed.
- 13
For one year you can only speak in quotes from a single film. Which film?
Look at whether he chooses a film with range or a film he loves, because those are rarely the same. Then make him order dinner using only that film.
- 14
We open a business together tomorrow. What is it, and what is my job?
The second half is the good half. The role he assigns you says what he thinks you are good at, and he will not have prepared that answer in advance.
- 15
You wake up tomorrow twelve inches shorter. What is the first problem?
Absurd physical hypotheticals get specific fast: the top shelf, the car seat, the view at a gig. The specificity is the comedy and it quietly reveals what he does all day.
- 16
You can send one sentence back to yourself at sixteen. What does it say?
This one bends toward sincerity, so let it rather than rescuing him with a joke. If he keeps it light, ask what the serious version would have been.
- 17
You have to give a twenty minute lecture tomorrow with no preparation. Subject?
Everyone has one topic they could talk about forever without notes, and this is the fastest route to his. Once he names it, make him do five minutes of it on the spot.
- 18
Your last three purchases become your entire personality. Who are you now?
He has to open his banking app to answer, which is most of the fun. Have your own three ready, because he will ask immediately and yours are probably worse.
- 19
You can delete one thing from the world forever, but everyone knows it was you. Still worth it?
The blame clause turns a lazy question into a real one. Notice whether he picks a minor daily annoyance or something he has clearly been thinking about for years.
- 20
In a universe where we never met, how do you think we would have met instead?
A good closer because it stays hypothetical while being about the two of you. The answer usually turns into a real story about how close you came to missing each other.

How to run these so they land
How to run these so they land
- Pick three, not twenty. A list read aloud sounds like a list, and he will start answering to get through it rather than to be funny.
- Answer first yourself. It sets the length and the level of absurdity, and it removes the sense that he is being tested.
- Save them for a captive setting: a drive, a queue, a wait for food. Hypotheticals die when either of you can reach for a phone.
- Never ask one immediately after a real conversation about the relationship. It reads as a test with a costume on.
If the answer is one word
If the answer is one word
- 1Ask for the mechanics: how would that actually work on a Tuesday?
- 2Ask who else is involved, because other people are where the story is.
- 3Ask what goes wrong first, which is funnier than what goes right.
- 4Offer a deliberately terrible answer of your own. Correcting you is easier than starting from nothing.
Reading the answers without ruining them
Reading the answers without ruining them
- These are not a personality test. If you announce what an answer reveals about him, he will start managing the next one.
- The interesting part is almost always the follow-up, not the first choice. First choices are borrowed; follow-ups are his.
- If a hypothetical lands somewhere genuinely sore, drop it and go to the next one. There is no version of this that is worth an actual argument.
- Take your turn on every question. A game where only one person answers stops being a game after about four minutes.
