  1. What are you working on at the moment?

    Why ask it

    Better than asking what marine biology is like, because the answer is specific and they are already thinking about it. It also tells you their taxon and their study site, which is what every other question should be aimed at.

  2. What does a field day look like, hour by hour?

    Why ask it

    You tend to get boat departures before dawn, hours of repetitive counting, and equipment failures, which is the honest picture. It also reveals whether they dive, trawl, snorkel, or work from moorings, all very different jobs.

  3. How much of the year are you actually at sea, and how much at a desk?

    Why ask it

    The ratio surprises most people: for many researchers fieldwork is a few weeks a year and the rest is data, writing, and funding applications. Anyone considering the career should hear the real split before choosing it.

  4. Which animal have you spent the most hours watching, and what surprised you about it?

    Why ask it

    Long observation produces things that never make it into papers: individual personalities, odd feeding tricks, a behavior seen twice in a decade. This is where the good stories are, and specialists rarely get asked for them.

  5. What is the strangest thing you have pulled up in a sample?

    Why ask it

    An easy question that gets a real story, and it often leads somewhere useful, such as how much of the deep sea is still unidentified or how much plastic now shows up routinely in sampling gear.

  6. How do you count animals you cannot see?

    Why ask it

    The methods are the interesting part: transects, mark and recapture, acoustic surveys, environmental DNA, photo identification of individuals. Understanding the method also shows you why population figures come with wide margins.

  7. What equipment do you use most, and what always breaks?

    Why ask it

    Answers usually involve salt water destroying something expensive, and they reveal how much of research time goes on maintenance and improvisation. Useful for anyone imagining the job as pure observation.

  8. How do you tag an animal without harming it, and how many tags do you get back?

    Why ask it

    This covers both ethics and practicality: permits, animal welfare review, attachment methods, and the recovery rate, which is often far lower than people assume. Low recovery is why long-term datasets are so valuable.

  9. What has changed at the sites you have been visiting for years?

    Why ask it

    Researchers with a decade at one reef, estuary, or kelp bed can describe change from their own records rather than from headlines, including changes that go the other way. This is the most credible climate answer you will get.

  10. Is anything you monitor doing better than expected?

    Why ask it

    Recoveries do happen, usually after a specific measure such as a fishing closure or a discharge being stopped. Asking for good news also tests whether they can distinguish evidence from advocacy.

  11. What do wildlife documentaries get wrong about your work?

    Why ask it

    Expect answers about compressed timelines, staged encounters, and the amount of waiting edited out. It is a light question that opens into how the public understanding of the ocean is formed.

  12. What is a common belief about sharks, jellyfish, or octopuses that is simply wrong?

    Why ask it

    Naming the species keeps the answer concrete rather than a general complaint about misinformation. Specialists usually have one correction they are tired of making, and it is worth knowing.

  13. How do you decide a population is in trouble rather than just fluctuating?

    This is the hardest judgment in the field and the answer covers baselines, survey length, and natural variability. Anyone who answers it instantly and confidently is worth questioning further.

  14. What happens to your data after a paper is published?

    Why ask it

    You learn whether it goes into an open repository, a national monitoring program, or a hard drive in a cupboard. Older datasets being unreadable or lost is a real and underappreciated problem in ocean science.

  15. Which conservation measure has actually worked where you work?

    Why ask it

    Ask for one they have seen with their own data. Answers often distinguish between protected areas that are enforced and those that exist only on a map, which is the distinction that decides whether protection means anything.

  16. Do you eat seafood, and how do you decide what to buy?

    Why ask it

    A fair question rather than a trap, and the answers vary widely among marine scientists. What is useful is their reasoning: species, gear type, origin, certification schemes, and how much they trust the labeling.

  17. What is the least glamorous part of the job?

    Why ask it

    Usually sorting samples, processing thousands of photographs, cleaning gear, or writing grant applications. This is the answer that makes the career legible to students who have only seen the documentary version.

  18. How is your work funded, and what does that stop you studying?

    Why ask it

    Funding shapes the science: short grant cycles discourage long monitoring, and some species attract money while others do not. It explains why obvious questions in the field go unanswered for decades.

  19. What would you study if permits and money were not a problem?

    Why ask it

    This is where you hear the real curiosity, and often the unglamorous organism they actually find most interesting. It also reveals which constraints they find most frustrating in practice.

  20. If someone wants this career, what should they do at sixteen, at twenty, and at twenty-five?

    Why ask it

    Asking for three ages forces concrete advice: which subjects, which volunteering or technician work, whether a masters is needed, and how people actually get onto research vessels. Vague encouragement is the answer to push back on.

Where you are likely to meet one

  • Public lectures and open days at aquariums, marine labs, and university departments
  • Beach clean-ups, rockpool walks, and citizen science surveys, where researchers are often present and talking
  • Conference public sessions and science festivals
  • Dive clubs and charter boats, which frequently host researchers doing surveys
  • Online seminars from marine institutes, many of which take questions from the public

How to ask

Aim at their animal and their site

Marine biology spans microbes to whales and physics to genetics. Find out in the first minute what they study, then ask questions about that rather than about the ocean in general, which is where the vague answers come from.

Ask for the method, then the number

How they know something is usually more interesting than what they know, and it stops you treating a modeled estimate as a headcount. It is also the fastest way to earn a real conversation with a scientist.

Ask about the last five years, not the future

Researchers are cautious about prediction and generous about observation. Questions about what they have personally recorded at a site get detailed answers, while questions about what will happen by 2100 get hedged ones.

What not to do

Do not ask them to identify a holiday photograph on the spot

Identification needs location, depth, size, and often a clear view of features the photograph missed. If you want an identification, bring those details, or use a regional species guide first.

Do not treat one researcher as the whole field

A coral ecologist is not an authority on whale acoustics or fisheries quota, and pushing them to answer outside their area produces guesses. Ask instead who does work on the thing you are curious about.

Remember outreach is usually unpaid

Talks at schools and open days are typically done in their own time. Keep questions to the time available, and if you want more, ask whether they run a lab page or newsletter rather than expecting a long email exchange.

Neighboring fields worth distinguishing

Marine biology studies life in the sea. Oceanography deals with the physics and chemistry of the water itself, and physical oceanographers may not work with organisms at all. Fisheries science focuses on harvested stocks and the models that set catch limits, and often sits inside government agencies rather than universities. Marine conservation work is frequently done by non-governmental organizations and involves policy and enforcement as much as research. Knowing which of these you are talking to changes both your questions and the usefulness of the answers, particularly if you are asking about careers.
