Funny Trap Questions to Ask Your Girlfriend

Twenty playful no-win questions for a girlfriend: impossible choices, small confessions and the things she has decided not to mention. They only work as a joke, so let her dodge whichever ones she wants to dodge.

20 questions · each with a note on why · conversation guide

The questions

Open any question for the note

  1. Be honest: whose fault is it when we're late?

    Why ask it

A trap with an obvious answer that neither of you wants to say first. If she immediately says yours and can cite three examples, she has been keeping records and you have your answer.

  2. If you had to choose between me and your morning coffee, how long would you need to think about it?

    Why ask it

Asking how long rather than which one is what makes this funny, because it concedes the answer in advance and turns the joke into the pause.

  3. Whose cooking is actually better, mine or yours?

    Why ask it

A rare trap where she can only implicate herself or you. Watch for the diplomatic split answer, which is usually funnier than either honest one.

  4. What's a habit of mine you've decided to just live with?

    Why ask it

Decided to live with is deliberately generous phrasing, which is what lets her answer honestly. Expect something small and specific, and do not defend it.

  5. If you could delete one app off my phone forever, which one?

    Why ask it

There is no safe pick, so the fun is watching her build a case. If she names one instantly, that has been bothering her for a while and it is worth hearing.

  6. If I asked you to name three things I wore this week, could you do it?

    Why ask it

An unwinnable memory test, which is why it has to stay a joke. Turning a failed answer into a genuine complaint is how this question ruins an evening.

  7. What's the weirdest thing you've ever googled?

    Why ask it

Expect an edited answer and enjoy the edit. The reason behind the search is funnier than the search, so ask what prompted it.

  8. Which of my stories have you heard so often you could tell it yourself?

    Why ask it

She can answer this without insulting you, but only just. If she can do the story in your voice, you have lost and should let her perform it.

  9. What's something I do that you find funny but have never mentioned?

    Why ask it

A compliment shaped like a trap. The answer is usually a small unconscious habit, and hearing it described accurately is the joke.

  10. If we swapped phones for a day, what would surprise you most?

    Why ask it

The comedy is entirely in how fast each of you agrees. Any hesitation gets read as suspicious, which is unfair and also the point.

  11. What's a gift I gave you that you quietly got rid of?

    Why ask it

Assumes it happened, which removes the option of a polite denial. If she genuinely has kept everything, that answer is worth more than the joke was.

  12. What's the most ridiculous thing you've done to get out of plans?

    Why ask it

There is a decent chance you were the plans. That recognition is the punchline, and it is much better to hear it now as a joke.

  13. If you had to describe me using only food, what would you say?

    Why ask it

Sideways enough that she will be honest without meaning to be. A dessert is affectionate, a condiment is a verdict, and both are funny.

  14. If we were on a game show and only one of us could win, would you throw the round?

    Why ask it

Forces a choice between loyalty and bragging rights, and both answers get a laugh. Anyone who claims they would throw it is lying and everyone knows it.

  15. What's the most embarrassing thing you've done to impress someone?

    Why ask it

She will probably pick a story about someone before you, which is the tactful move. Do not steer it back toward yourself.

  16. What's a nickname you have for me that you'd never say out loud?

    Why ask it

Invites a small confession and usually produces the goofiest reveal of the evening. If she will not say it, ask how many syllables and work from there.

  17. If one of my friends had to become your friend instead, who would you pick?

    Why ask it

Trap-shaped but genuinely informative, because the pick tells you which of your friends she actually likes rather than tolerates.

  18. What did you think about me on our first date that you've never admitted?

    Why ask it

Only funny once the room is warm, which is why it sits late. Expect one flattering detail and one that is not, and take both in the same spirit.

  19. What's a chore you've been pretending you don't know how to do?

    Why ask it

Everyone in every household has one. Asking with amusement rather than an edge is the difference between a confession and the start of an argument.

  20. If you planned our whole next year, what would you cancel first?

    Why ask it

A good closer because it is a joke with something real underneath. Whatever she cancels is something she has been dreading, and now you both know.

How to keep a trap question a joke

Practical guidance for the conversation itself

Setting these up properly

Say out loud that it is a trap

Naming the game first removes the sting. When she knows the question has no right answer, she can play with it instead of trying to pass it, and that is where the laughs are.

Take every question yourself

Answer each one about yourself either before or after she does. A run of unwinnable questions aimed only at her is not a game, it is a quiz she cannot pass.

Ask on a good night

These need a relationship with slack in it. On a night when something is already unresolved, questions about apps, chores and things you do that annoy her will land as accusations.

How to react to the answers

  • Laugh at the honest answers, especially the ones about you. That single response decides whether she answers the next one honestly.
  • If she dodges, let the dodge stand and move on. Chasing it turns the game into an interrogation.
  • When something real surfaces, such as a dreaded plan or a habit she tolerates, acknowledge it briefly and come back to it another day.
  • Do not analyze a joke answer. Asking what she meant by comparing you to a condiment kills the whole set.
  • Wrap up while it is still funny. Fifteen questions with everyone laughing beats twenty with someone defending themselves.

Where these go badly wrong

Using an answer as evidence later

If a joke answer about your habits shows up three weeks later in a real argument, she will never answer one of these honestly again. Whatever gets said here stays here.

Loyalty tests dressed as jokes

Would you pick me over your best friend, your family, your job. These are not traps, they are tests, and there is no funny answer available. Leave them out entirely.

Asking a question you already have a verdict on

If you know what you want her to say about the phone, the plans or the chore, you are not joking. Say the real thing plainly instead, on a different evening.
