Most people picture a crime scene. Analysts tend to describe a bench, a queue of sealed packages, and long stretches of documentation. The mundane answer is the accurate one, and it moves the conversation off television straight away.
Which discipline do you work in, and how did you end up in that one rather than another?
Why ask it
Forensic science is not a single job. DNA, toxicology, latent prints, firearms, digital, and questioned documents involve different training and different amounts of interpretation. The route in is usually accidental: a vacancy, a supervisor, a placement.
How long is your backlog at the moment?
Why ask it
Backlogs are the defining problem of most public labs, and analysts discuss them readily because it is not their doing. The number, in weeks or months, tells you more about how the system works than any question about technique.
How many cases are open on your bench at once?
Why ask it
Case volume shapes everything: how much time each item gets, how often work is interrupted, how mistakes get a chance to happen. Analysts carrying dozens of cases have a triage system, and how they triage is the part worth hearing.
How much of your week is bench work, and how much is paperwork and court?
Why ask it
Notes, subpoenas, and waiting in courthouse corridors take far more of the week than outsiders expect. This is one of the main reasons experienced analysts leave, and it rarely appears in any description of the career.
What does a piece of evidence pass through before it reaches you?

Chain of custody is the least glamorous and most litigated part of the process: collection, packaging, sealing, transport, storage, logging. An analyst can point to exactly where it tends to break, which is rarely inside the lab.
What is the most common mistake made before evidence gets to the lab?

Expect specifics from the scene: contamination, wet items sealed in plastic, poor packaging, things collected in the wrong order. These answers explain why certain cases cannot be rescued no matter how good the analysis is.
What can your discipline actually support, and what do people assume it can?

The central question for the field. Some disciplines report numbers with stated uncertainty; others can only say consistent with, and the distance between those two phrases is where wrongful convictions live. A careful, qualified answer is the good sign here.
How do you word a report when the result is inconclusive?

Inconclusive is a legitimate result and an unwelcome one. Listen for whether the lab has settled wording for it and how they resist requests to make it sound firmer. Hesitation on this question tells you more than confidence would.
What do you do when an investigator clearly wants a particular answer?

It happens, and good answers describe procedural distance: fixed report language, limited case information, escalating to a supervisor. Anyone who says it has never happened is either very new or not being straight with you.
Do you know the details of the case while you are working on it, and would you rather not?

Context can bias interpretation even in conscientious people, which is why some labs limit what an analyst is told. Whether they have considered this, and whether their lab manages it, separates a scientist from a technician.
How is your work checked before it leaves the lab?

Technical review and verification are the safeguards that actually catch errors. Ask who reviews, whether the reviewer already knows the first result, and whether anything is repeated independently. The details show how seriously the lab treats its own fallibility.
What happens when a mistake is found after a report has already gone out?

Every lab eventually produces one. What matters is whether there is a route for telling the court and the defense, and whether the analyst has seen it used. If the question makes them uncomfortable, note it and move on rather than pressing.
Which television version of your job annoys you most, and what does it get wrong?

A dependable way into a real conversation, because the complaints are concrete: instant results, one person running every discipline, a machine that prints out a name. It also lets them describe what fiction leaves out, which is usually the paperwork.
How long do these tests really take from receipt to result?
Why ask it
Real turnaround times, days for some analyses and months for others, show how far public expectation has drifted, jurors included. Ask which step is the slow one rather than asking for a total, because the bottleneck is often administrative.
Which instrument do you depend on most, and what happens when it is out of service?

Equipment is expensive, shared, and sometimes down for weeks waiting on a part or a service contract. The answer explains a surprising share of the backlog and of why some cases jump the queue.
What did your training involve, and how often is your competence retested?
Why ask it
Qualification varies by country, lab, and discipline: degrees, in-house training, competency assessment, periodic proficiency tests. Whether they can describe being tested, and how recently, indicates how well the lab is governed.
Has your field changed its mind about anything since you started?
Why ask it
Several forensic techniques have been narrowed or dropped as the research improved, and practitioners hold views about it. Asking what got revised shows you take the science seriously, and answers often include what they now word more cautiously.
How do you keep the content of these cases from following you home?

Case material can be genuinely distressing, and analysts are seldom asked. Expect practical replies: no scene photographs late in the day, treating items as items, colleagues who understand. Ask once, and let them decline without follow-up.
What would you tell an eighteen-year-old who wants your job?

The advice is usually unromantic: study chemistry or biology rather than criminology, expect modest early pay, expect to write constantly, expect to testify. For anyone considering the field it is the most useful answer on this list.

Practical guidance for the conversation itself
Before you start asking
- Find out which discipline they work in and use that word rather than forensics generally. A toxicologist and a latent print examiner do not share methods, vocabulary, or working hours.
- Assume anything about an open case is closed to them, including whether they are working on one you have read about. Ask about process instead of about cases and the conversation stays open.
- Ask about their lab rather than about the field. Practice, staffing, accreditation, and turnaround times differ enormously between jurisdictions, and generalizations are where interviews go wrong.
- If you are writing fiction, say so early. Analysts are often generous with technical correction when they know it is not going to be quoted as an opinion on a real case.
What they will not be able to tell you
Casework is confidential, and much of it is also evidence in a live proceeding. That normally covers case details, names, whether a particular item was submitted, and any view on guilt. Sealed matters, juvenile cases, and anything under appeal are firmly out. A refusal is not evasiveness, and pressing it puts a working analyst in a genuinely difficult position. The workable route is to ask how a category of evidence is handled in general, and to let them choose whether to illustrate it.
If you are considering the career
- Ask the specific labs you would want to work in what degrees and coursework they hire from. Requirements differ by country and by discipline, and general advice found online is often out of date or from another jurisdiction.
- Ask about starting pay, shift patterns, and on-call expectations directly. These are the details that make people leave within three years, and nobody volunteers them.
- Ask how much of the job is testifying. Some people enjoy court and some find it the hardest part, and it is not optional in most roles.
- Ask whether you can visit or shadow. A morning watching evidence intake and documentation tells you more about whether you want the job than any course description.
Questions to leave alone
- What is the worst thing you have seen. It asks someone to relive the material for your interest, and most will refuse or give a hollow answer.
- Requests for graphic detail. If the detail matters to what you are researching, ask about the procedure rather than the scene.
- Do you think that person did it. Analysts are not investigators, and being asked to speculate cuts against the whole discipline of their work.
- Anything asking them to critique a colleague's testimony in a real case. It puts their employment at risk, and it is not something they can answer honestly to a stranger.
