Questions to ask when planning a wedding
Every wedding vendor has a contract, and the questions you ask before signing are the only leverage you get. These sets cover venues, photographers, caterers, DJs, florists, planners and officiants, plus the questions for the couple themselves.
A few to start with
What is always in the fridge at home?
Domestic detail that guests immediately recognize and can confirm out loud. It is also a question about how they actually live rather than how they present themselves.
What decisions do you still need from me, and by when is each one too late?
Coordinators hold open questions they assume you know about: linen colour, cake cutting time, a seating change. Asking for the deadline attached to each one prevents the calls that arrive the night before.
What insurance do you carry, and what do you recommend we buy?
Ask specifically about their own liability coverage as well as what they suggest for you. A planner who cannot say what they are insured for is asking you to carry all of the risk.
What actually happened when you proposed, second by second?
The blow by blow beats the summary, because the interesting parts are the mistakes: the wrong pocket, the interruption, the weather. She will hear details she was too distracted to notice.
What was the first thing you noticed about her?
The bride is nearly always braced for a compliment about her looks and is delighted when it turns out to be her laugh, her handwriting, or the fact that she was arguing with someone. Ask for one specific thing, not a list.
What are you doing to make this last twelve hours, including several hours outdoors?
Longevity is a prep and product question, not a hope. Listen for primer choice, setting powder, blotting plan and whether they build the base in thin layers. Vague answers here explain the shine in the evening photographs.
